Guided Ascent of Mount Triglav
Mount Triglav (2,864 m) is the highest mountain in Slovenia and the undisputed symbol of the nation. Its distinctive silhouette appears on the Slovenian coat of arms and proudly inspires the logo of Grip Guides.
As the most iconic peak in the Julian Alps, Triglav has played a central role in Slovenian history and identity. For generations, reaching its summit has been considered a rite of passage. Legends, stories, and traditions surround the mountain, making it far more than just another alpine peak.
While thousands of people climb Triglav every year, reaching the summit is not simply a hike. This is a genuine mountaineering objective that requires fitness, sure-footedness, and careful planning.
Our route involves approximately 2,000 vertical metres of ascent and around 8 kilometres of hiking one way. Strong hikers can complete the climb in a single day, although we prefer a more comfortable pace that allows time to enjoy the mountain environment and safely manage the more technical terrain.
Along the way, we pass Triglavski Dom na Kredarici (2,515 m), commonly known as Kredarica, Slovenia’s highest mountain hut. Reaching the hut typically takes 4–5 hours of steady hiking.
From Kredarica, the character of the climb changes. The final section to the summit follows a protected route equipped with steel cables and fixed protection. In Slovenia, this terrain is classified as a very demanding protected route (zelo zahtevna zavarovana pot). While often compared to a via ferrata, the exposed terrain and alpine environment make this a true mountaineering ascent rather than a simple hiking excursion.

Day 1:
We meet in the morning and perform a final equipment check before starting our ascent.
The trail climbs steadily through alpine forests and mountain pastures before entering the dramatic high-mountain landscape beneath Mount Triglav. Throughout the day, your IFMGA-certified guide sets a comfortable pace and shares insights about the mountain, local history, and the surrounding peaks.
After approximately 4–5 hours of hiking and around 1,500 vertical metres of ascent, we arrive at Triglavski Dom na Kredarici (2,515 m), Slovenia’s highest mountain hut.
From the hut, we enjoy spectacular views across the Julian Alps, have dinner, discuss the summit plan for the following day, and spend the night in the hut.
Day 2:
After an early breakfast, we begin our summit push toward the highest point in Slovenia.
The route follows sections equipped with steel cables. Although often described as a via ferrata, this section is a genuine mountaineering route where confidence, focus, and proper guidance are essential.

Standing on the summit beside the famous Aljaž Tower is a moment that every mountaineer remembers. On clear days, views extend across Slovenia, Austria, Italy, and Croatia.
After celebrating our achievement and taking photos, we return to Kredarica Hut for a short break before descending back to the valley.
